Community centers are important “Third Places” that serve cross-sections of local populations. For the Town of Holly Springs, it was important to create a fun and active environment that is attractive and inviting to their residents. At the same time, the project had to be economically designed to be feasible. To meet these needs, the design approach was to simply organize uses within and around a large, translucent “container.” Attached to the outside of the container is the gymnasium at the front and a strip of classrooms at the back. Within the container is a large open space, an elevated running track and a central, curved volume or “vessel.” The “vessel" acts as a central organizing element that hides the locker rooms, utilities and aerobics rooms. Concentrating these elements within this curved central mass preserves the openness of the day-lit interior, freeing it from clutter. Meanwhile, the elevated running track loops around the volume, creating an enjoyable pathway that overlook a variety of activities below along with views to the outdoors. Together these elements create a dynamic environment that openly displays its activities while also organizing them into discrete zones. The project is today a much loved gathering spot for the Holly Springs community.
