The visionary Green Network Plan draws from the spirit and principles of the historic Olmsted plan for Baltimore City. Much like the historic plan, the Green Network Plan envisions a comprehensive network of nodes and corridors that interconnect parks, green spaces, and neighborhoods for environmental and social vitality. Baltimore's current green spaces already play a vital role for urban communities. However, access to quality open space is uneven across demographic divides. Many inner city neighborhoods are challenged by numerous vacant houses and lots while also lacking trees, biodiversity and green space.
The Green Network Plan seeks to strategically repurpose blighted conditions into green community assets and improve access to open space and recreation through a connective network of green corridors. As a city-wide system that connects communities, schools, streams, forests, parks, university campuses, and centers of commerce and employment, the plan presents multiple benefits, creating safer, more livable communities while also promoting equitable economic development that would catalyze revitalization. Meanwhile the plan also improves stormwater management, air quality, ecosystem resilience, and biodiversity, improving the ecological health of the urban environment. By building upon existing green assets and prioritizing historically disinvested neighborhoods, the plan seeks to uplift communities and create a more inclusive and vibrant urban environment.
